RELIEF / CASUAL – Residential Counsellor USW Bargaining Unit Local 8327
Relief staff are asked to work on an ‘as and when’ needed basis to cover LGIH staff during times of leave/sickness/training as well as covering some special events when additional staff may be required. Shifts are offered with short notice, including overnights. Relief must be willing to have an availability of at least 4 shifts per month.
Reporting to the Residential Manager – the Residential Counsellor will be part of the LGIH team that provides support, referrals and advocacy to women and their children residing at Interval House. The counsellor’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Supportive counselling for women regarding issues of domestic violence on our 24-hour crisis line.
- Performing crisis intervention, one-on-one and group counselling as required.
- Assisting women with safety planning.
- Supporting and assisting women as they work through the steps of their transitional plans.
- Identifying and discussing the resources required to achieve a woman’s transitional goals and to assist and obtain the required resources.
- Making referrals to counselling services, including social assistance, legal aid, parenting support, education and training, health services, etc.
- Advocacy with third parties, such as with FCS, social assistance, lawyers, police, etc.
- Providing ongoing support to clients around communal living.
- Performing administrative tasks, including maintaining complete case records, files, communication logs, release of information, and discharge summaries.
- Maintaining safety and security of the shelter
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Up to date CPR and 1st Aid
- Post-secondary education and/or equivalent work experience in the VAW sector.
- Documented supportive counselling experience from a feminist perspective
- Strong assessment skills
- Knowledge of community-based service providers
- Knowledge & understanding of both women’s & children’s needs & issues, violence against women and children, including barriers to safety
- Knowledge and understanding of the legal system and how it impacts women’s & children’s lives
